Thanks to everyone that came out to support the Church of Skatan’s second Guerilla Skate Jam and bbq!

The weather was perfect, everyone was shredding, and the cops couldn’t stop us. Skaters from all over Southern California heard the call and swarmed the Santa Barbara skate park for a two hour skate jam this past Saturday afternoon.

Veteran skater Tony Tieu made an appearance, as well as brand new pro Mike Abarta and up and comers (and Church of Skatan team riders) Beau Psaila and Griffin Lounsbury.  Hordes of other locals, visitors, and groms were on hand as well, trying to get a piece of the action as everyone turned it up a notch attempting to impress the secret judges with a combination of style, difficulty, and just plain rad tricks.  Following the Skate Jam, the crowd migrated from the park back to Church of Skatan for the after jam bbq.  Besides devouring tons of pizza, hot dogs and soda back at the shop, the crowd was treated to an impromptu best trick contest on the box in front of the shop, which was won by Tommy Barbish with a 50-50 front 360 out.
One kid even volunteered to drink all the water from the hot dogs in exchange for a free beanie, gnarly! It didn’t take long before all the commotion in front of the shop drew the attention of the cops, but Church of Skatan employee, and MC for the day, Jan the Whopper Jr. smoothed everything over and made nice with the po-po. Everyone moved inside where DJ Ray was spinning everything from AC/DC to Biggie, courtesy of Skull Candy.
Jan announced the winners for the day, Beau Psaila, Todd Welling, and Tao Antrim took home the prizes, with best trick going to Todd for tail slide heelflip out on the down ledge, blunt slide across the whole pyramid box, blunt to 5-0 on the pyramid box, tre flip manual on the pyramid box, front tail 270 heelflip out, damn, take your pick! We got to give out tons of prizes from all of our amazing sponsors, some being raffled, some being tossed, and others being earned with trivia answers. I think every single person left with something for free because our sponsors hooked it up so good! Thanks to everyone that came out, all the skaters, The Church staff, Jan for MCing, DJ Ray, Mike Bags, Skull Candy, Brixton, Shorty’s, Es, Emerica, Altamont, Vans, Vox, Gravis, Krew, and Supra. Keep a look out for our next Guerilla Jam in May!
